Allergan Textured Breast Implants Cancer Lawsuit Information

Allergan’s BIOCELL® textured breast implants have been shown to have a very high incidence of breast implant-associated large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), which is a potentially deadly form of cancer. On July 24th, 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall of all Allergan BIOCELL® textured breast implants and tissue expanders.

In July 2019, the FDA issued a recall of the following Allergan Biocell textured breast implants due to significantly high cases of rare cancer directly linked to the product:

  • Natrelle saline-filled implants
  • Natrelle silicone-filled implants
  • Natrelle Inspira silicone-filled implants
  • Natrelle 410 highly cohesive anatomically shaped silicone-filled breast implants

If you or a loved one has contracted cancer due to any of the above Allergan implants, please contact Relion Group immediately to see if you qualify for a free consultation with an attorney. You may be entitled to significant compensation for any injuries incurred as a result of their negligence.

Currently, the FDA is not recommending the immediate removal or replacement of these implants in asymptomatic patients, but that may change. At this time, Allergan’s Smooth and MICROCELL® breast implants and tissue expanders have not been recalled.

What is a Textured Breast implant?

Breast ImplantLawsuit

Textured implants represent 10% of all breast implants sold in the U.S. with the Allergan brand comprising 5% of the implants used. The FDA has instructed all hospitals and doctors to cease the use of recalled Allergan implants to avoid any future cases from occurring. Allergan has complied with the FDA’s request and stopped sales on the implants that were recalled.

Textured breast implants develop scar tissue to stick to the implant, making them less likely to move around inside of the breast and become re-positioned. Texturing offers some advantage in diminishing the risk of a tight scar capsule.

*It's important to note that breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) occurs most frequently in patients who have breast implants with textured surfaces.

The process for creating the textured surface of the implant shell varies significantly between the three major manufacturers (Sientra, Mentor and Allergan), and as you might expect the performance of each company’s textured surface implants varies as a result of these differences. The least aggressively textured implants (the smallest ‘bumps’ on the implant surface when you image it using a microscope) have the least adherence to the fibrous capsule, but also the lowest risk of seroma. The most aggressively textured implants (the biggest ‘bumps’ on the implant surface) have the highest degree of adherence but also the highest rate of seroma.

Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)

Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma is a cancer of the immune system. BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer.

This cancer is very serious and can be deadly if not treated properly.

Symptoms typically present themselves between 3 and 14 years after the initial placement of the implants. So, even if you do not currently exhibit symptoms, if you have received one of Allergan’s BIOCELL® textured implants or tissue expanders, we recommend that you speak with an attorney as soon as possible.

Lymphoma cells develop in the scar tissue and any fluids surrounding the breast implant, and it may take up to 10 years for symptoms to appear, which include:

Lymphoma
  • Pain and tenderness near breast implant sites
  • Swelling near breast implants
  • Excessive fluid buildup around the implant
  • Lumps in the breast or armpit
  • Unexplained skin irritation
  • Sudden fatigue

According to the FDA report, those who have Allergan Biocell textured breast implants are at an increasingly high risk of developing breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). In its investigation, the FDA identified 573 cases of BIA-ALCL and 33 deaths worldwide. Of those cases, 481 have been directly linked to Allergan implants– a rate six times higher than that of other textured implants sold in the country.
